Are scleral lenses uncomfortable?
For most people, no — often the opposite. Because the lens rests on the white of the eye (far less sensitive than the cornea) and floats on saline, many wearers find them more comfortable than conventional rigid lenses.
How much do they cost, and does insurance help?
Cost depends on the complexity of your fitting and lens design, discussed transparently at your consultation. Many extended health plans reimburse medically necessary contact lenses for conditions like keratoconus — we provide documentation to support your claim.
How long does the fitting take?
Each lens is fully custom, so expect an initial consult, a diagnostic fitting and follow-up visits over a few weeks while we refine the fit and vision.
Can they correct astigmatism or presbyopia?
Yes. Custom designs handle high and irregular astigmatism, and multifocal options address both distance and near vision.
How do I care for them and how long do they last?
You'll fill the lens with preservative-free saline before wear and clean it nightly. They're worn during waking hours, not slept in, and typically last about one to two years with proper care.
I was told I'm not a candidate for contacts — should I still come in?
Very possibly. Scleral lenses are frequently the answer for eyes that couldn't tolerate other lenses. An individual assessment is the only way to know for sure.
